Wigwam Ultimax Comfort: 9.5/10
The combination that makes up this hiking sock is very unique; they're crafted from 32% polypropylene, 29% acrylic, and the rest nylon and polyester.
This combination of material is very unique. I would say it is not as comfortable as merino wool, but a close second. The upper of the sock is much more comfortable than the base. When testing these hiking socks, I didn’t feel any extra rubbing or hot spots pressing against my feet.
I would say overall these are comfortable hiking socks, they are not as comfortable as the Darn Tough Hiker Full Cushion but definitely get the job done. If you are trekking or going on multi-day hikes this would not be our top recommendation.
Warmth 8/10
The lack of Merino wool is where these hiking socks struggle to keep warm. I would say since these are a midweight hiking so I could expect them to be slightly more warm than they actually are.
I hiked in as low as 30° weather and these kept me decently warm. I felt they could have done a slightly better job for warmth near the toes. This is where the material gets lighter on the Ultimax. If you are looking for the warmest hiking socks, check out the Smartwool Classic.
Breathability 10/10
The Wigwam Ultimax are the most breathable hiking socks you will come across. The wicking is unbelievable. when hiking in the summer, they're venting your feet off without trouble. I also tested these hiking socks in different hiking boots that are thicker, thinking that would reduce the breathability they did not.
These hiking socks shine while hiking in the rain. They dry extremely fast and also keep your feet as dry as possible and wet conditions. I would keep a pair of Wigwam Ultimax for a wet rain day, because they definitely come handy.
Durability 8.5/10
I would say I noticed thinning towards the sole of the foot on these hiking socks. This did not start happening until approximately 6 months after testing.
Although there have not been any holes at the bottom of these socks they're quite thin in some areas. I will say the mid-calf of the sock has not lost its elasticity and does not fall down while hiking, which is a major complaint among hikers in terms of durability concerning hiking socks.
The Wigwam Ultimax overall has a good amount of durability and will last you months while hiking.
Is The Wigwam Ultimax Hiking Socks worth it?
As you can see the Wigwam Ultimax hiking socks are very comfortable, and one of the best breathable water resistant hiking socks on the market. I will say the ability to purchase these for under $20 is a steal in my opinion.
While there are better options out there such as the Smartwool Classic or Darn Tough Hiker Micro crew, they do not have the excellent value The Wigwam Ultimax hiking socks provide under $20.
