Hoka Kaha 2 GTX | Comfort 9.5/10

The first and probably most important quality of any hiking boot in my opinion as a Mountain Guide. While testing the boots, I take note of my plantar fasciitis, the more weight I feel I am putting onto the my sole the more I feel my plantar fasciitis flaring up.

I was so impressed with that Hoka Kaha 2 GTX I didn’t feel any sort of flare up. From the moment you slip them on, the plush padding around the ankle and underfoot cushioning provide a snug, supportive fit, effectively minimizing fatigue on longer treks.

The boots’ breathable materials ensure that your feet remain dry and comfortable, even in warmer conditions or during more strenuous hikes. Additionally, the flexible sole adapts to varied terrains, allowing for a natural foot movement while maintaining excellent traction and stability.

The toe box is designed to offer ample space, enhancing comfort and preventing any pinching. These features, combined with proper insulation, help keep your feet warm during cold weather hikes. Unlike the Salomon Quest 4 which are more rigid.

During a recent weekend trip across the rocky and uneven trail, these boots proved their worth tenfold. I recall a particular day when we decided to push beyond our planned route, ending up with over 10 miles under our belts by sundown.

Historically, a hike of this length would have left me with sore feet, however I noticed that I was able to walk around my house without any shoes on with no discomfort whatsoever.

These boots have saved my time and ability to keep performing tasks at home after my hikes, rather than laying feet up on the couch complaining of soreness.

Ankle Support 10/10

The ankle cuff of these hiking boots deserves a special mention for its comfort. It is made of mesh but none of the low quality kind which causes itching.

It snugly wraps around the ankle, providing a secure fit without any chafing or discomfort, which is often a concern with over-the-ankle designs. The padding within the cuff adds a layer of protection and support, crucial for navigating uneven terrains without compromising on mobility.

The ankle support of the Hoka Kaha made of high quality materials leaves an impression, where I would usually feel discomfort at the end of backpacking trips I am pleasantly surprised by the cushion they provide.

traction of boots

Kaha 2 GTX | Traction 8.5/10

The traction on these hiking boots is nothing short of impressive, offering a steadfast grip on a variety of surfaces. Engineered with deep, multi-directional lugs and Vibram Megagrip rubber, the outsole bites into the terrain, providing stability and confidence on slippery slopes, snow, rock terrain, loose gravel, and even slick mud.

You can compare the traction of these boots to the Columbia Newton Ridge. Whether ascending steep inclines or navigating through wet conditions, the boots’ superior traction ensures each step is secure.

On a particularly rainy hike through the trails were slick with rain and covered in a carpet of wet leaves. I anticipated the usual cautious pace, given the conditions, but these boots defied my expectations.

The exceptional traction felt like having four-wheel drive for my feet, allowing me to maintain a steady pace without once slipping.

Climbing up muddy inclines felt surprisingly effortless, thanks to the rockered sole, which also enhanced comfort and propulsion.

I found myself trusting in the boots’ grip more with each step. This level of trust in my footwear’s traction truly enhanced my hiking experience, allowing me to enjoy the beauty around me without constant worry about losing my footing.

Water Resistance 10/10

The durability of the waterproofing technology of the Kaha 2 GTX is particularly noteworthy. Featuring GORE-TEX footwear fabric, these boots have consistently kept water out after multiple hikes through varied conditions, a testament to their high-quality construction and materials.

It’s not just the immediate dryness that impresses me, but the long-term reliability of the waterproofing that stands out. This feature alone makes the boots a worthy investment for any serious hiker.

Furthermore, the breathability of the boots, despite their robust waterproofing, is remarkable. Often, waterproof footwear can lead to overheated and sweaty feet, but these boots manage to maintain a comfortable internal climate.

The balance between keeping water out and allowing air in ensures that my hikes are pleasant from start to finish. It’s this combination of features that elevates the hiking experience, allowing me to focus on the adventure ahead, rather than the conditions of the trail.

While testing out my boots, I had to carry my dog over ankle-high water, to my surprise both my socks and feet were as dry as they could be, not one drip of water into the shoe!

Overall protection 9/10

The ankle and foot protection provided by these hiking boots is another standout feature, ensuring safety and comfort even in the most challenging terrains. The boot's upper, made from durable materials like leather and waterproof membranes such as GORE-TEX, contributes significantly to this protection.

The reinforced toe cap and rugged outsole guard against sharp rocks and debris, while the robust design around the ankle offers additional support, minimizing the risk of twists or sprains. The leather upper also plays a crucial role in maintaining dryness during water exposure and enhancing the boot's structural integrity for backpacking activities.

This comprehensive protection is crucial for tackling steep inclines and rocky paths, providing a shield against the unpredictable elements of the wild.

Moreover, the strategic cushioning around the ankle not only protects but also adds an element of comfort that’s appreciated during long treks. The design seems to strike the perfect balance between offering protection and maintaining flexibility, allowing for a natural range of motion.

This thoughtful approach to ankle and foot safety is evident in the boot’s performance, where each step feels secure yet unrestricted. Whether navigating a tricky descent or crossing a rocky creek, I’ve consistently felt supported by the boots’ protective features, giving me the confidence to push further and explore more.

Sustainability 10/10

We're thrilled to note that HOKA has implemented several environmentally friendly initiatives in the creation of the hiking boot. Specifically, this boot includes a PU liner that utilizes 50% soybean oil, demonstrating a shift towards more sustainable materials.

Additionally, the boot incorporates recycled polyester in the collar, mesh, and laces, further emphasizing HOKA's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Moreover, the boot's DWR coating is notably free from perfluorocarbons (PFCs), substances recognized for their adverse environmental effects. These eco-conscious features significantly enhance the boot's attractiveness, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable outdoor gear.

Fit 9/10

The fit and comfort of this hiking boot are standout features that distinguish it from many others in the market. Right out of the box, the boots offer a snug yet comfortable fit, accommodating a wide range of foot shapes thanks to its versatile lacing system.

I did not have to apply any special lacing techniques to fit the shoe to my natural foot shape. The cushioning around the footbed and the supportive design of the midsole contribute significantly to the overall comfort, making long treks less daunting.

Moreover, the boots are designed to minimize the typical break-in period, allowing wearers to embark on extended hikes without the worry of blisters or discomfort. This immediate comfort, combined with a fit that feels custom-tailored to the wearer’s foot, sets a high standard for hiking footwear.

Despite the overall comfort and supportive design, as someone with a wider foot, I found the boots to fit more narrowly than expected.

This aspect may necessitate sizing up or seeking models specifically designed for wider feet to ensure the perfect balance between snugness and comfort. Additionally, using thicker socks can alleviate pressure on the shin and enhance the overall fit and comfort of the footwear.

Warranty/Customer Service 10/10

The customer service provided by Hoka is truly commendable, offering a level of support that significantly enhances the purchasing and ownership experience. Alongside their high-quality products, Hoka extends a one-year warranty on their hiking boots, demonstrating confidence in their durability and craftsmanship.

This warranty not only covers manufacturing defects but also gives buyers peace of mind. My personal experience with Hoka's customer service, albeit not directly related to these hiking boots, was exceptionally positive.

I had an issue with a different pair of shoes, and the response from Hoka was prompt, courteous, and efficient, leading to a swift resolution. This experience left me highly impressed with their commitment to customer satisfaction and further solidified my trust in the brand.

Design and Aesthetics 9/10

The design of the boot is built in a robust manner revealing stability but at the same time lightweight to it allowing for a perfect medium. The design of the lacing systems allows for a snug fit without pressing into the top of your foot and ankle.

There are three rungs to cross your laces at the top of the shoe. This really secures the shoe, once hiking my ankle and foot move in one pattern with excellent stability and warding against any ankle sprains.

One downside is getting the shoe on, you have to pull on the tongue of the ankle mesh to get it on due to the narrowness of the boot. This is far from a downside however, this may be due to the width of my foot.

How We Tested And Our Methodology

When it comes to reviewing hiking boots, experience, and expertise matter.MountaineerJourney.com is a 100% independent publisher with over 12+ years of experience testing and reviewing outdoor products especially hiking boots.

We personally tested the Hoka Kaha 2 over 1 year on and off trail, every time they revealed how well they work on technical terrain and much more.

What Other Hiking Boots to consider?

We absoluetly love the Hoka Kaha 2, the comfort and traction are unmatched. A close cousin to consider is the Hoka Anacapa 2 which has the same lacing system, nubuck leather, and performs just as well on day hikes.

Those looking for a more budget friendly boot can consider the Merrell Moab 3 which have the same Vibram Megagrip rubber outsole. The Moab 3 are not as forgiving at the Kaha 2 and do not have the same level of comfort, hence the price difference.

One could consider the Salomon X Ultra 4, these are more like trail runners. They are very lightweight, however lack the traction the kaha 2 have against rocky terrain. The Salomon X Ultra 4 are also more day hiking boots as they do not have the durability and build quality the Kaha 2 possess.

The X 4 Ultra are a popular option among hikers, they do have a sleek deign with decent comfort and stability. As we said, there may be issues with durability as compared to the Hoka Kaha 2 which are extremly durable.

The last hiking boot to consider are the Salomon Quest 4, which are a high performance boot. The Hoka Kaha definitely are more comfortable and stable. The Quest 4 shine in the area of traction and performance, but not by much.

Where the Quest 4 lack , the Kaha 2 make up in, comfort, stability, durability and quality build. If you are considering the Quest 4, make sure you are up against rocky trails and more technical terrain which is what they are used for.
