Brooks Ghost Max 3 vs Glycerin Max 2 Price Comparison

Currently, the Glycerin Max 2 costs $200 while the Ghost Max 3 is $40 less at $160.

Comfort

Glycerin Max 2 impact absorption testing on concrete throughout forefoot striking phase

The comfort difference between these two max cushion shoes comes down to philosophy: protective comfort versus plush softness.

The Brooks Ghost Max 3 uses DNA Loft v3 foam in its midsole, a nitrogen-injected material designed to deliver a light, soft, and durable ride.

The Ghost Max 3 impressively balances impact absorption without sacrificing stack height, making each step feel cushioned yet grounded. It’s a game-changer for runners who crave comfort without the extra bulk!

Ghost Max 3 testing heel compression on concrete

The Ghost Max really does an excellent job of not “overdoing” the cushioning, unlike other maximalist shoes in 2026.

The Glycerin Max 2 features a dual-density midsole that offers a softer heel landing and a firmer forefoot for improved toe-off.

I found the rocker on the Glycerin Max 2 to be very aggressive, leading to a little bit more toe-off than some people may want out of their shoe.

If you do not love an extremely rockered toe-off on your shoe, I would avoid the Glycerin Max 2.

The ground feel of both shoes is a consideration, as they both fall into the maximalist category. In terms of ground feel, neither shoe offers a significant return on investment.

In a direct comparison, the Ghost Max 3 offers much better ground feel thanks to its smaller stack height.

High stack cushioning in footwear is prioritized for protection and impact reduction over bounce. Neither of these shoes will give you that springy, energy-returning pop like the Altra Experience Flow 2 or the Hoka Solimar.

However, the Ghost Max’s firmer platform keeps your legs engaged, while the Glycerin’s softer feel can lead to that slightly sluggish sensation during faster sections.

When it comes to overall ride feel, the Ghost Max definitely has a smoother transition that is less pronounced and more efficient than the Glycerin Max.

Traction

Both shoes feature strategic rubber placement, but they behave differently in terms of grip.

I tested out the Ghost Max 3 and every type of terrain imaginable, from trails to asphalt, concrete, hospital floors, and mixed gravel paths. The outsole has deeper rubber tread on the lateral side of the shoe, which provides extra grip on inclines.

The Glycerin Max 2 has rubber placement, just like the new Glycerin 23’s. The rubber and pattern are not as aggressive, and it offers a more streamlined option that prioritizes low weight over maximum grip.

While this is not a negative for the Glycerin Max 2, it does not handle wet terrain as well as the Ghost Max 3. Add a few slips running on wet asphalt after rainfall on the Glycerin Max 2.

The challenge often lies in ground feedback. On looser gravel, I could adjust my stride more effectively to maintain better contact with the ground compared to the Glycerin Max 2, which didn’t provide as good a feel.

Fit

Glycerin Max 2, noting the heel height

Brooks shoes tend to have the same standard fit across all of their shoes. The one exception is the brand new Brooks Ghost 18, which tends to run long.

I tested both the Ghost Max 3 and the Ghost Glycerin Max 2 in a men’s size 10.5 E. Both fit true to size without any hot spots or compression points. The Glycerin Max 2 has a slightly narrower toe box.

If you were looking for more overall volume, I would go after the Ghost Max 3.

Stability and Support

Testing overpronation on Glycerin Max 2, some instability issues on concrete

Here’s where the Ghost Max 3 truly shines. Despite being in similar stack-height categories, the actual stability I experienced during testing is much different.

The Ghost Max 3 features an impressively wide platform, with a forefoot width of about 119mm and a heel width of around 101.5mm. This design ensures a stable, flat landing that enhances your confidence and comfort with every step.

The geometry of the Ghost Max 3 is the real winner here. It doesn’t have any invasive posts and/or hard plastic shanks. The stability is largely due to the blunted platform and firm rubber.

The Glycerin Max 2’s towering heel stack and softer foam created an entirely different sensation.

While testing the Glycerin Max 2, I noticed some instability, especially when ascending on my recovery runs.

The very cushy platform tends to give you that dreaded topple-over effect, leading to instability, especially when I overpronate my left foot.

The question is whether you are going for a max-cushion shoe or one that needs some stability with added comfort.

Stay away from Glycerin Max 2 if you have any stability issues or tend to overpronate.

Breathability

Testing ankle stability on concrete

The Ghost Max 3 has excellent ventilation pockets. I tested these out in 90°F summers with pretty good airflow and ventilation throughout the entire shoe.

The Glycerin Max 2 uses the same mesh as the Ghost Max 3. However, there are fewer ventilation pockets.

Testing the Glycerin in the same weather, I noticed they were slightly warmer but nothing major.

Weight

weighing the brooks ghost max 3 on our scale at 9.5 oz

I weighed the Ghost Max 3 at 9.5 oz and the Glycerin Max 2 at 11 oz per shoe on our calibrated scale.

The biggest difference is the shoe’s overall makeup. The Ghost Max 2 definitely has a lot more foam underneath, which makes it blocky underfoot. However, the aggressive rocker makes up for this bulkier feel.

The Ghost Max 3 is much lighter on your foot and definitely takes the crown here.

Brooks Glycerin Max 2 Weight: 3.5 out of 5

Durability

View of both outsoles after 50+ miles of testing on both. No visible wear.

After testing out both these shoes for several months in 2025 and 2026, they have shown similar wear patterns.

The Ghost Max 3 has less wear on the outsole than the Ghost Max 2, which shows some compression, especially in the heel stack.

Overall, none of them have lost any performance measures since we started testing, which is important when you’re paying a premium price for either shoe in this category.

Expect both shoes to last you over 250+ miles.
