Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Mid 2 Comfort: 9/10
My first impression of these hiking boots was a complete surprise. When slipping on the boot, I felt the midsole was very thin. however once I stood I felt my foot and toes sink into the extremely comfortable Altra Ego midsole.
I was expecting a decently comfortable hiking boot such as the Salomon X 4 Ultra, where comfort is traded off to balance out the lightweight ability and performance of the boot.
Overall the ALL-WTHR 2 Is an extremely comfortable hiking boot, when I took these out on the trail for the first time I felt like its flexibility combined with comfort lead to a very enjoyable hike.
The Lone Peak 2 offers the FootShape fit which mimics the natural human foot. The longest part of the shoe is the first toe box and it gets smaller towards the fifth so mimicking the natural human foot this is extremely comfortable as most hiking boots are one size throughout the whole front of the boot.
I felt the toe box was one of the best features of this boot. I had no issues with compression or blisters when testing these boots. Speaking of breaking in these boots, I did not have to break them in whatsoever due to its lightweight profile there is no break in period.
The stack height of these boots are subtle. While the outsole does not look extremely large like the Hoka Kaha 2 or Hoka Anacapa 2, it performs just as well as they do. The stack height is 25mm supporting your foot throughout the rugged terrain.
Moving toward the upper, there is a great amount of cushioning around your ankle. I felt zero areas of constriction, I felt my ankle was able to reach normal range of motion for a nice comfortable stride.
Weighing just 14 oz on my scale, the Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Mid 2 is the lightest hiking boots I have tested to date.
As a frame of reference, the Merrell Moab 3 (A comparable lightweight model) weighed in at 1.1 pds or 15% heavier than ALL-WTHR Mid 2!
Traction: 8.5/10
What makes the Lone Peak ALL-WTHR 2 stand out is it performs as well as some of the best traction hiking boots on the market yet it is so lightweight.
Crafted with MaxTrac outsole and TrailClaw lugs, this boot performs very well on trail. While on even terrain or a slight incline you feel the max grippiness these legs dig into any type of terrain you would like them to. We even tested these in snow and rain with overall good traction performance. The lugs are well spaced apart and give you the maximum traction you look for on the trail.
What I love about the lugs of these boots is that they follow in the natural human foot shape just as the FootShape Fit is designed to do. I feel this adds an extra advantage in terms of traction for the Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Mid.
One area where these hiking boots do not excel is rigidity. When hiking on very technical terrain, you want a rigid hiking boot so the outsold does not conform to the uneven surface thus losing your grip.
These boots are quite flexible which you would expect them to be for such lightweight hikers, however it puts you at a disadvantage for extreme inclines and uneven surfaces.
I would not recommend using the Lone Peak 2 on extremely difficult terrain, and leave that for a more technical terrain boot such as the Salomon Quest 4. The Lone Peak Mid 2 should be kept for easy-to-moderate terrains and hikes <10 miles per day.
Overall Protection 3.5/5
The ALL-WTHR Mid 2 uses a variety of textiles and synthetic materials to make up a majority of the boot. Most of the material is welded rather than traditional stitching. While this loses points on durability, it makes up to carry less weight than traditional stitching.
The Stoneguard insert supposedly provides a nice firm underfoot for protection. I did not necessarily agree with this, as I stated before this is a quite flexible hiking boot. Starting at the toe box there are areas of added protection not quite rugged and safeguarded as other hiking boots, it does a decent job with toe box protection.
The heel area has more protection than the toe box. The outsole gets slightly thicker towards the heel giving an added layer of protection.
The ankle cuff offers great overall protection; it is flexible enough to allow for range of motion while hiking, however is still restrictive when needed to prevent ankle sprains.
When it comes to overall protection, the ALL-WTHR 2 has you covered for a lightweight hiking boot. It is expected that lightweight hiking boots will have less overall protection to make up for weight, which is exactly what this boot does.
Water Resistance 5/5
The Lone Peak 2 is equipped with E-Vent waterproof liner. This waterproof liner is extremely breathable in all different types of weather elements. During our 10 minutes submersion test the ALL-WTHR Mid performed extremely well, keeping out any moisture.
Of additional note, I do a lot of hiking especially in the morning, the morning dew or frost tends to soak most hiking boots. These held up very well against morning dew and frost cover. We have tested many Gore-Tex hiking boots and the Lone Peak 2 perform just as well, however they are definitely more breathable than the GTX counterparts.
The Lone Peak 2 are excellent waterproof boots with enhanced breathability compared to other waterproof hiking boots. I would also add, they tend to dry faster than the majority of hiking boots due to the light synthetic materials.
Does The Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Mid 2 Fit Well?
At first, I felt a good amount of room when slipping on these hiking boots. I will say my foot is not used to the FootShape Fit technology and they felt slightly big to me. I tested a men’s size 10.5 and would recommend sizing down a half size if possible.
I felt a little extra room around the heel area as well. These hiking boots are not particularly narrow or wide fitting. I would say they are just the right width.
The two tying lugs around the ankle are robust and allow a very secure fit after lacing these tight. The tongue of the boot is able to conform to the top of your foot without discomfort. I would say you're able to get a more secure fit with this lacing system than most hiking boots. I did not have to perform any special lacing techniques.
Altra Lone Peak 2 Fit 4.5/5
Altra Lone Peak 2 Stability & Support 3.5/5
Starting at the ankle, The ALL-WTHR 2 offers a nice flexible ankle cuff when hiking. As I stated before, the flexibility of this hiking boot is unreal however with increased flexibility comes a trade-off.
The enhanced flexibility does not help with ankle stability. I did not experience any ankle injuries while testing these boots. In the case of the Altra Lone Peak 2, the mid has below average support. I wish there was more robust material around the ankle to give better support.
What makes this boot stand out is the drop is zero. Meaning the toes and the heel are at the same height. This is what makes Altra Lone Peak such a lightweight fast-moving boot.
The zero drop allows for more natural foot striking, and better movement through the trails. Many trail runners have a zero drop, this is the first hiking boot to have zero drop.
In terms of support, the cushion of the midsole gives great shock absorption for a lightweight hiker. I felt these boots are able to hold an edge while going up a steep incline. In general, do not expect extreme lightweight hiking boots to have excellent support and stability.
Durability 8/10
The Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR has shown no signs of breakdown during my lengthy testing process. The synthetic material is welded which definitely decreases the durability. I have not personally noticed any breakdown of the synthetic material in the last 4 months while testing.
With all that being said, lightweight hikers will break down much faster than the majority of hiking boots. The synthetic materials just cannot withstand the constant beatdown on the trail. Expect to get your miles out of these hiking boots and then replace them sooner rather than later.
Is the Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Mid 2 worth it?
Don't let the low scores in durability and overall protection lower your expectations of the Altra Lone Peak 2, This is the best lightweight hiking boot on the market.
These hiking boots feel like running shoes at times, combined with the FootShape fit makes it an extremely enticing option. Being able to get the best lightweight hiking boots on the market under $200 is a steal in my opinion.
If you're somebody who is mainly hiking throughout the weekends, and on flat or slightly inclined terrain this is definitely the hiking boot for you.
The strengths of this hiking boot are the flexibility, light weight, good traction, and great comfort.
The drawbacks to consider would be there are more supportive and more “rugged” models out there like the Hoka Kaha 2 and Keen Targhee IV for hikers in more advanced terrain.
Overall, as a weekend hiker I don’t think you can go wrong with picking up a pair of the Altra Lone Peak Mid 2.
