With a remarkable comfort rating of 8.5 and generous cushioning, it’s an excellent choice for hikers seeking comfort without breaking the bank.
The Vibram outsole bolsters its functionality by delivering increased traction across light and technical trails. The Moab 3 impressed on technical trails, including rough granite ascents, loose gravel sidehilling, and uneven sandstone.
One of our favorite features of the Moab 3 is the sleek sock liner. It provides a little cushioning between the top of your foot and the boot itself. The ankle cuff features more padding than most hiking boots and boasts a well-padded tongue.Â
The Moab 3’s waterproof feature is notably impressive, thanks to its integrated waterproof membrane that keeps feet dry in creek crossings and wet conditions. We felt the Merrell Waterproof membrane performed better than Gore-Tex, in terms of water resistance and breathability.Â

The Moab 3’s stability and support are undeniable. The Merrell Moab 3 has one of the highest stability and support scores across all the boots we have tested. Its nice, wide, and functional base provides an excellent foundation for hiking on technical terrain.
It does not feature any plastic posts or shanks but achieves stability through engineering rather than prescriptive technologies. The Moab 3 does run a little on the heavier side, weighing in at 1.02 pds per boot, which is 15% heavier than the Salomon Elixir Activ. I noticed my foot fatigue was more pronounced in the Moab 3 than in other lighter hiking boots because of the extra weight.
Overall, at $110, the Merrell Moab 3 is easily the best budget hiking boot; this is also our first recommendation to beginner hikers.

The Elixir Activ just recently cracked our best budget hiking boots list of 2026. With a comfort rating of 8/10, the Elixir Activ is not as plush as the Moab 3, but still deserves a tip of the hat for its comfort.
The Ortholite insole is comfortable and inviting, yet it still has a firm base that provides a stable platform with minimal stack height (we measured 23mm at the heel).
Impact absorption during our limestone testing was adequate; it’s not as effective as the Hoka Anacapa 2, but it shouldn’t cause pain or joint issues on your hikes.
One feature of the Elixir Activ is its flared heel design, which provides greater contact with the terrain and significantly enhances grip. I noticed the biggest difference while sidehilling.
While the boot is quite flexible, the prescriptive technologies, including the active chassis and Sensifit, stiffen it up for much better support on the trail. I expected the Elixir Activ to be a total fail in support and stability, but the boot held strong during testing. Although I did have some ankle instability, as the cuff does not come up as high as other mid hiking boots
At $127, the Elixir Activ is hard to beat for value. Stick to other models if the lightweight profile doesn’t entice you.

The Timberland Mt. Maddsen is a bit of a disappointment, especially since they raised the price almost $50 from the original Mt. Maddsen. However, the price increase comes with better performance.
The Mt. Maddsen 2.0 comes with heavy, chunky lugs that bite into almost any terrain. I tested it on wet limestone, granite, sandstone, and gravel, plus packed singletrack, with great results. These boots do weigh quite a bit at 21 oz., but that extra weight helps pound the outsole into the terrain and hold effective grip on the trail.
Flexibility and overall protection are a staple of this grainy leather boot. They feature a rubber rand that starts at the toe box and moves toward the arch of the foot, protecting against scrapes or sharp objects on the trail. The ankle cuff gives a great secure lockdown with zero internal movement.
Overall, we recommend the Timberland Mt. Maddsen 2.0 for those who prefer a premium leather hiking boot but are still on a budget.

If you’re looking for an affordable hiking boot without sacrificing quality, the Columbia Newton Ridge Plus II stands out as a cost-effective option at just $80. While they are not as durable as their counterparts, they have great value for what you pay.
I can personally attest that I have tested the Newton Ridge for over 6 years, so I am well-versed in its long-term use and durability.Â
Their specialized Techlite midsole ensures your feet are cushioned against shock from rough terrain while the Omni-Grip outsole provides decent traction.
The Omnigrip outsole is a little soft, comparable to the Salomon Contagrip outsoles. I felt it was difficult to hold an edge while hiking up steep terrain with the Columbia Newton Ridge.
The outsole seemed to also flatten out after a year of use, rendering it more difficult to maintain stability on trail.
The comfort of the Newton Ridge was lackluster. While the outsole is soft, the PU-coated leather is very stiff. I felt some compression in my toes and feet with these boots. The midsole itself underperforms on cushion level.Â
Despite their lightweight nature and appealing price point, there is a compromise on long-term durability when compared to pricier models.
These boots may also offer less support for carrying heavier weight, such as backpacking.
Nevertheless, if your adventures typically involve day hikes or trails that aren’t too challenging, choosing the Columbia Newton Ridge Plus II means securing a budget-friendly pair of lightweight boots with average features.

The step-in comfort is great, with an improved sock liner. While testing these out on uneven granite, I felt the shock absorption was top-notch.
Despite being lightweight, the Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX ensures substantial protection against the elements with an upgraded stack height and Maytrx upper.
Overall, The X Ultra 5 may be more expensive than its budget friendly counterparts.However, the value that they provide at their price point is incredible.
Consider the X Ultra 5 if you are willing to pay more for better performance.
