In this article, I'm going to share my HONEST Timberland Mt Maddsen review for those who are wondering whether they are still WORTH IT in 2025. As a Professional Hiking Guide myself, I recommend these hiking boots for those looking for a budget, high performance hiking boot.
For this review, I have put in over 60 miles into testing my own personal pair of the Timberland Mt Maddsen throughout 2023, 2024, and the beginning of 2025. so I'm very familiar with how they feel and perform on the trails. I'll go over comfort, traction, overall protection, water resistance, fit, stability & support, and durability.

While it is not one of our best rated hiking boots of all time, they provide more value than they are worth. The Mt Maddsen Mid fairs well against the comparable competition such as the Merrell Moab 3, Columbia Newton Ridge, and Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid.

Mt Maddsen Comfort: 7/10
The Mt Maddsen boot boasts an anti-fatigue removable footbed coupled with a compression molded EVA midsole offering sustained support and relief through rigorous trails. I felt the midsole was not as inviting and cushioned as more expensive hiking boots. The insole does not conform to the shape of your foot, it is more static.
The midsole definitely could have been more padded, however as a budget hiking boot this offers the level of comfort I would expect. The toe box is extremely voluminous, there is more than adequate room. I didn’t feel any areas of compression anywhere in this boot.
Moving towards the ankle, I felt it was adequately padded for having such a high upper. I didn’t feel any hot spots or have issues with blisters. The ankle cuff gets a thumbs up here.
The lining comprises REBOTL fabric made from 50% recycled PET plastic materials reflecting Timberland’s dedication towards environmentally considerate practices without compromising on providing durable footwear comfortable enough for extensive use despite its heftier stature compared to lighter hiking gear.
One downside to the Mt Maddsen is the weight. I weighed my pair of Men’s 10.5 at 1.6 pds which is much heavier than most models on the market. This is due to the heavy leather and double stitching it is crafted with.
As a frame of reference the Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR 2 weighed in at just 14oz making the Mt Maddsen 55% heavier! Something to consider if you are looking for a lightweight hiker.
Traction: 7/10
The Timberland Mt Maddsen WP Hiking Boots are recognized for their dependable grip on both level surfaces and gentle inclines, attributable to their rubber outsoles.
The outsole is unbranded, but seems to be crafted from Timberland themselves. The lug pattern is very superficial and irregular. I would have preferred a deeper lug pattern with more organization, I believe that would’ve made the grip that much better.
Those who have taken the Maddsen boots out on the trails can attest to their satisfactory traction over wet or stony grounds; they can be trusted for a selection of mixed trail conditions. I felt it was moderately difficult to hold an edge while hiking on steep inclines, most likely from the superficial lug design.
The outsole is fairly stiff, which definitely aids in traction and grip on the trail. The stiff outsole compensates for the loss of grip and traction regarding the superficial lugs.
Overall the Mt Maddsen Mid places an emphasis on firm traction and stability underfoot. I have concerns with the lug depth and traction on steep inclines. Outwise it stands up as a suitable boot for various types of hikes encountered by outdoor enthusiasts.
Overall Protection 3.5/5
The Timberland Mt Maddsen WP Hiking Boots are crafted from full-grain leather, providing strong resistance to scuffs and tough landscapes. The gusseted tongue coupled with a waterproof system effectively blocks water entry, ensuring dryness within the boots when faced with water/snow.
Unfortunately this boot is missing a protective rubber toe cap. Be careful on the trail when facing any sharp elements, the leather is not robust enough to battle sharp objects on trail. The heel does have an area of reinforced leather but is missing a protective rubber shield as well.
The shock absorption of the Mt Maddsen is pretty decent. Again, the thin midsole takes away from the shock absorption potential. Overall, I didn’t experience any sore joints or ankles.
Featuring a mid-cut upper, these hiking boots deliver considerable support around the ankle area, which I felt was good while trying to maintain my balance on rugged trails. They come furnished with sturdy metal eyelets and flat laces that ensure your feet stay firmly in place, reducing chances of slipping while trekking.
For $100 the Mt Maddsen has the amount of overall protection you would expect. Any areas of reinforced rubber on the toe cap or heel would increase the price for material demand.
Water Resistance 5/5
One standout feature of the Timberland Mt Maddsen is the fact that they do not use gore-tex. They use their own in-house waterproof membrane Timberdry. The Timberdry waterproof membrane works great against water/snow.
During my testing, I was able to use the Mt Maddsen WP in snow up to 6 inches, I didn’t experience any flooding or water seeping into my boots. I was quite impressed by the waterproofing technology of the Mt Maddsen.
It’s tough to say whether the Timberdry waterproof membrane or the full leather grain profile take away from the boots’ breathability. The Mt Maddsen definitely retains heat, and should be considered for more winter/cold weather hiking.
Does The Timberland Mt Maddsen Fit Well?
The Mt Maddsen fits extremely well. When first putting on these boots, there is more than adequate enough room in the toe box. This boot is definitely great for someone who has a wide foot size as well. I tested a men’s 10.5 and did not have to size up or down.
The Mt Maddsen is one of the most voluminous hiking boots you can ask for. I had no trouble fitting into these even with the bulky Darn Tough Hiker Full Cushion hiking socks.
The lacing system features two hooks at the top, I was able to get a nice tight fit without any special lacing techniques.
Overall, the Mt Maddsen fits very well; it is on the wider side for a hiking boot so adding thicker socks may help if you tend to run narrow.

Crafted with a tall upper, the Timberland Mt Maddsen WP hiking boots provide superior coverage around the ankle area, delivering outstanding support and stability over rocky and irregular landscapes.
They are built to endure, offering lasting support that guarantees both comfort and stability even when carrying heavier burdens during extended treks.
The presence of a TPU shank reinforces this sense of stability amidst uneven terrain. I felt that the Mt Maddsen have a nice wide and stable base to hold your weight on. I was able to wear 40lb backpack and achieve the stability that was required on the trail.
Durability 6.5/10
The Timberland Mt Maddsen WP hiking boots offer robust durability, catering well to the budget-conscious hiker. Although the full grain leather with double stitching is impressive, it does not possess the durability, as something like Nubuck leather.
This type of leather will wear over time and begin to break down. I also noticed my outsole began to flatten out after a year of use, not rendering it useless but I noticed I began to lose some stability while on trail.
Overall, the Timberland Mt Maddsen is exactly what It needs to be for a budget hiking boot. Don’t expect them to last for endless hiking seasons; however, you will get your money’s worth out of them.
