Here we are going to review Hoka Anacapa Mid GTX hiking boot for those wondering if they are WORTH it in 2024. Known for their design innovations and performance improvements, the Anacapa boots feature sustainability in materials, unique cushioning for comfort, and support designs that enhance their effectiveness in challenging terrains.

I have personally tested these boots for the last 2 months. I’ll be sharing my personal experience as an experienced hiker and outdoors expert.

The Anacapa 2 was released in July of 2023, and it is Hoka’s second iteration of this hiking boot already. This model has been getting great reviews all over from fellow hikers. The Anacapa 2 boasts more quality materials, comfort and traction as compared to the pilot model.

The Hoka Anacapa are a great lightweight go to hiking boots with exceptional traction and comfort. it's boasts the Vibram Megagrip rubber outsole as most Hoka boots do. As compared to other boots, the Merrell Moab 3, Salomon Quest 4, and Salomon X 4 Ultra the Anacapa 2 have superior comfort. The comfort goes beyond most standard hiking shoes, giving that extra plush customers ask for.

The grip gives these boots a high rating; overall, these hiking boots are one of the top in 2024. Users also highly praise performance and durability, which we agree with. Hoka's growing collection of hiking footwear includes the standout Anacapa 2 Mid GTX, known for its high cushioning, durability, and performance over rough terrain.

Our Hand-Tested Analysis

Comfort 9.5/10

When slipping on the boot at first I feel the excellent comfort of the sugarcane EVA insole. This sole is a standard among hiking boots however, the sugarcane is a eco-friendly alternative compared to the EVA (ethylene-vinyl-acetate) which is petroleum based such as in the Salomon Quest 4. I must say,I found the sugarcane EVA slightly more comfortable than the industry standard EVA.

The toe box has decent wiggle room, the shoe tends to get more narrow towards the toe box. I did experience some numbness in my pinky toe however that went away after my 3rd hike of breaking them in.

One iteration Hoka made to mid GTX model is the synthetic materials around the ankle. Customers complained about the comfort in this area, I have to say the iteration with the new ankle cuff has been as comforting as ever.

Another great feature is the lacing system Hoka Hiking boots incorporate. There are 3 eyelets for the top 3 lacing lugs. I love this because it hugs my ankle being a “mid” hiking boot giving that extra stability I need to get through my hikes that have rough terrain.

The heel-to-toe drop is 7mm. I have achilles tendonitis of my left heel  this heel-to-toe drop ratio is perfect, I did not feel any flare ups while on the trails.

Excellent comfort is a company standard for all Hoka shoes and hiking boots. The Anacapa 2 passed the comfort test with flying colors. The cushioning in the midsole is also top-notch, providing excellent shock absorption on long hikes.

Overall, the Hoka Anacapa 2 is a reliable and comfortable option for those looking for stability and support on rough terrain. Currently, these are the highest rated hiking boots for comfort in our hiking boot reviews, comparable to the comfort of a running shoe.

Traction 9/10

The Vibram Megagrip outsole boasts maximum grippiness and traction. They have the same outsole as the Hoka Kaha 2. I have been very impressed with the Vibram Mega grip. The lugs are not as deep as the Salomon X Ultra 4 however, they perform up to par with the grippiest boots out there.

The Anacapa 2 Mid GTX excels on technical terrain, providing exceptional grip and precision, especially over rocks and steep inclines.

I chose to take on one of the Catskills’ most difficult hikes last fall. The trail was muddy and littered with loose pebbles after the heavy rain the night prior. My self-assurance surged when I fastened the laces of my boots featuring the Vibram Megagrip outsole.

Although the trail was rather flat at the outset, I quickly encountered challenging terrain that required me to climb severe inclines. The boots offered unrivaled stability, as if they were sinking into the ground with every step I took. Without losing my footing once, even when clambering over wet boulders or navigating down treacherous slopes, the grip remained unwavering.

The trail included a frightening section where I had to cross a narrow, moss-covered wood bridge. I could feel the dew soaking into the moss, turning it into an icy surface. My Vibram Megagrip outsole, however, kept my boots firmly in place as I crossed the river and continued on my way.

Testing out the traction of these boots was rather fun. I pushed my limits to go after the slickest terrain following my experience in the Catskills, and Anacapa 2 held up every single time. No hiking boot will ever feel like glue to the surfaces you are hiking on, but these get as close to that as possible.

Overall Protection 9/10

Starting from the front of the shoe, the outsole partially covers the toe cap, providing protection against sharp objects and terrain. The Hoka Anacapa 2’s thick outsoles protect the side of the shoe, a feature most hiking boots lack. Compared to other boots in Hoka's lineup, the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX offers superior protection with its robust design and extended heel.

As we approach the midsection of the shoe, synthetic materials blend seamlessly with the Nubuck leather to withstand harsh weather conditions and ensure your feet remain warm, particularly during winter. Gusseting on the tongue keeps out unwanted water and debris.

As previously mentioned, the outsole is exceptionally thick, a characteristic of Hoka footwear. The base is very wide, but robust enough that it does not limp in rough terrain.

The extended heel design of the Hoka Anacapa 2 adds another layer of shock absorption. By extending the heel, the boots provide additional cushioning at the point of initial ground contact. This design feature is particularly beneficial during downhill descents, where the force on your heels is greatest. The extended heel helps to absorb this impact, protecting your joints and enhancing overall comfort.

Don’t forget about the Hoka’s signature Meta-Rocker geometry; it plays a crucial role in enhancing shock absorption. This design features a slight curve in the sole, which promotes a smooth, rolling motion with each step.

This not only helps to reduce the impact on your heels and forefoot but also encourages a more natural stride, minimizing fatigue over long distances. This was most noticeable on flat trails during my testing; I felt I could move much quicker and smoother.

Water Resistance 10/10

These boots, equipped with Gore-Tex technology, successfully withstand our 10-minute submersion test. The combination of the Gore-Tex and Nubuck leather definitely reduces the breathability of these boots.

You can use these in warm weather, but be prepared for sweaty feet (you may want to wear thinner socks). On the contrary, the Anacapa 2 has become my favorite winter-time hiking boot because of the superior insulation. 

Since these boots are mid-height, I was able to pass through several creeks and rivers; I did not experience any leaks or water in my boots, however. 

It's important to note that the Anacapa 2 lacks a non-GTX version, (unless you are looking at the breeze version) indicating that all models feature the industry-standard Gore-Tex membrane for waterproofness.

Weight 8.5/10

The Hoka Anacapa 2 GTX is definitely a midweight boot; I personally weighed mine in at 2 lbs, 5 oz for a men’s 10.5. It is obviously not as lightweight as the Salomon; however, I will mention that this boot “feels” a lot lighter than its weight. What do I mean by that? When hiking with this boot, the terrain does not disturb my smooth gait.

I can move swiftly and quickly with this great boot. I really believe it’s due to the thick outsole. The weight may not be light, but the “feel” of this boot is light. Compared to trail runners like Hoka's Speedgoat, the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX offers a similar lightweight feel and performance, making it a versatile option for both hiking and running.

Fit 8/10

I ordered a men’s 10.5 which fit perfectly. My boot size is usually on the wider side; however, I ordered a regular size and I did not have any discomfort or blisters. I did not have to size-up or down. The contoured footbed provides excellent arch support and fit, ensuring your feet feel supported and secure with every step. The fit of the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX also provides stability and support on uneven terrain.

As we say in every article, it’s best to try on hiking boots before purchasing them because fit can be very subjective. Some users say they have trouble fitting into the Anacapa boots with narrow feet. However, the lacing system is very unique and can help loosen the toe box.

Design and Aesthetics 9/10

The design of these boots are sleek and unique as all Hoka Models are. The swallowtail heel and thick outsole give it a modern look which captures the attention of fellow hikers. 

Sustainability 10/10

We are very excited to note that the Anacapa 2 mid GTX is made of environmentally friendly materials such as 100% vamp and quarter mesh, 100% recycled polyester and recycled polyester lacing system as well.Even the Gore tex liner has recycled face fabric. All of these materials are well cushioned and environmentally friendly.

We tip our hat to Hokas initiative to start using recycled materials environmentally friendly materials. They work just as well if not better compared to other boots. We have noted zero issues with durability of these materials.

Durability 9/10

The specifics I love about these boots are the nubuck leather and the three eyelets for lacing. Despite hiking through a lot of wet conditions, I have not noticed any failure of the leather or early signs of wear. Both unique and durable.

I noticed a small rip in the tongue after hiking; however, this was because I caught the tongue against a twig, which ripped at it. 

As time passes, we will update this post to note any issues with durability, as they can take years to show, but for now, we are very satisfied.

Other Versions Of The Anacapa 2

We specifically tested and reviewed the Hoka Anacapa 2 mid GTX, although there are several other models out there such as the low top version, and Anacapa breeze. The Anacapa breeze comes in a low top version and mid.

The Anacapa breeze version was made to increase the breathability of the Hoka boot, it lacks the gore tex liner that the Hoka Anacapa carries. The gore tex liner is known to reduce the breathability of most shoes.

The Anacapa breeze is made with engineered air mesh and DWR treatment to increase it's breathability. Be careful with river crossings as this is not a waterproof boot.

The Anacapa breeze version is made for hikers in warmer weather, there should be no differences in traction against rocky terrain as it still has the Vibram Megagrip rubber.

The Hoka Anacapa boot also comes in a "low" version which lacks ankle protection while having less weight and foot fatigue. Typically, we do not recommend low cut versions for hikers if they have issues with ankle sprains or stability issues.

The low version would be best for hikers who want to move quick through their trails, or even run. The mid GTX is a more popular version among hikers.

My Experience with the Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid GTX

Overall, I had an excellent experience with the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX. I was really impressed with the “feel” and cushion of these boots.

Like I said before, they may weigh over two pounds but move like they are lightweight hiking boots. The vibram megagrip rubber have excellent traction against uneven terrain and are perfect for day hikes.

I have no durability concerns even with the sustainable materials and recycled polyester they use. Overall, I had a great experience with these boots and would recommend it to any hiker.

What Other Hiking Boots To Consider?

As we said, the Hoka Anacapa 2 are rated as the most comfortable boots out of our collection. What makes them the most comfortable is the conforming shape of the boot, and the outsole. The swallowtail heel makes the hike or backpacking trip very smooth, it feels as if you are not putting much effort into your heel striking.

The Hoka Kaha 2 also features the swallowtail heel but is not as lightweight as the Anacapa. The Kaha 2 also do not have the breeze version, some users complain about the breathability. At $240, the Kaha 2 is much more expensive as compared to the Anacapa mid at $195 setting it apart from the competition.

Next up is the Keen Targhee III to consider at $170, it is a more stiff boot that does well against tough terrain. The Targhhee III is one ounce heavier than the Anacapa. What's commendable about the Targhee is that they manufacture their own waterproof membrane, we noted less breathability issues with a non-gore-tex model.

That being said, it does not have the lightweight "feel" the Hoka Anacapa feature. From a comfort perspective, the Anacapa beats the Keen Targhee III every time. We think in general, hikers would be more happy with the Anacapa 2.

The last one to consider is Hokas new trail runner the Hoka Speedgoat 6. A much lighter version weighing less than 2 lbs at 1 pd 4 ounces for the low version. The speedgoat feature the vibram megagrip rubber known for excellent traction. As we have stated before, the low version is not for hikers who experience ankle sprains or have issues with stability.

The Hoka Speedgoat would be an option for hikers who want to hike faster, run the trails, and have issues with foot fatigue.

The Anacapa's durability and sturdy build make it a better option than the Speedgoat shoes for backpacking and hiking.
